More Ideas for Black and White Decor

I haven't had many apartments that have been decorated solely in black and white. However, back in the days when I had roommates it was actually a pretty good idea. People could just put all of their furniture together and it would still look somewhat cohesive even if it was in totally different styles.

On a lot of decor forums I've noticed that most decorators suggest getting in contact with your roommate before you move in or before you go shopping and working out a design game plan. Has anyone ever done this? It just seems like it would be difficult to work with all the different personalities if you have several different people living in one house or there are budget constraints.

Where to Use Black and White Decor in 2012

For some reason black and white decor always reminds me of New Years Eve instead of year round decor. I know that a lot of people like it in contemporary styles because it works with almost any accent color. Last year though instead of this traditional color palette I've seen all different kinds of gray instead. That's right for this year the new trend in black and white decor is just mixing the two tones together.

Black and White Christmas Decor

I know that this was popular a few years ago but I just couldn't get too into the idea. There was lots of modern styles as well as fake white trees. I'd much rather see a flocked version. You still get the color but it's a little bit more natural. I also think it would be awesome to take the typical ceramic Christmas village and spray paint it all one color; either white or black. it's a lot easier then trying to get all of those details with handpainting. Trust me, it's a family tradition and I would love to just be able to paint everything one color it would save so much time too. You'd just need larger scale pieces but you may be able to find some options at thrift stores that you can do a makeover on; just make sure your painted finish can handle the heat of Christmas lights. It would be a contemporary version of a Christmas village.

Black Decorating Designs for Your Entire House

Black decorating designs can be subtle accents in your room or entire wall colors that match black blinds. This can be a theme that you really use throughout your entire home. This is going to lend a lot of continuity and also help you when you go furniture shopping or go to pick paint colors. This is great if you have an open floor plan or you just don't know exactly what design direction to go in. Sometimes just choosing a specific style or color can really be the jumping off point for the rest of the design of your home so you can bring in a black fabric chair or go for an entire black bedroom.

You can start off very simply in the entryway with black and white decoration and then work into the rest of the house with a black dining room table. This could include a console table in a rich painted finish. Then you could pair it with a modern white or silver mirror. You could even upgrade your flooring choices. Since the entryway is such a small area then you can really spend a little bit more money to make a great first impression by going with more of a marble effect. You can use real stone or just try out a high-quality ceramic. Then you could really bring in more of a traditional feeling either with an inlay or a star pattern or a black and white checked pattern. You could even hang a lantern overhead instead of the traditional kind of chandelier.

Next pink and black decor can really be tons of fun for a kids; room. This is a way to take a very traditional kind of motif such as posters and give it an all new life. Most teens rooms have posters. You can just paint out different squares on the wall to act as makeshift frames to put the pieces in. You could either do black or pink and then do the other color on the reverse. You can even paint music notes on the wall to really show off your children's hobbies. Paint is so inexpensive that it's a chance to just have a lot of fun.

The really great thing about black and white home decor is that it does allow you to focus in on your scenery or whatever is outside. In fact, if you live in the city then this is perfect because you really get to bring all of the gray colors of skyscrapers right into your own home for more of a continuous kind of feeling that can help a small condo feel a lot bigger than it actually is. In this kind of case you want to focus on quality leather furniture with high end glass coffee tables and stainless steel accents for a contemporary look that is perfect for the city lifestyle.

You can also have a lot of fun by just doing very traditional items in unusual color palettes. For instance black bathroom decor is instantly going to change things up. Bringing in towels or a toothbrush holder in this color is really going to pop without being too out there. This is great if you have a lot of people that share a bathroom or you just want a way to add a different kind of element to a guest bath.

The really great thing about this is that is so prevalent and this is a way to just add tons of personality even if you just put up your own shots and then really paper your entire wall with them. You can find a lot of different hanging systems that are going to be sleeker than those very basic picture frames.

Decorating Tips for Black Tile

Black tile can seem a little bit harsh. In fact, if you already have this in your kitchen or bathroom you might think that it needs to be replaced totally. It can be very masculine. Instead, you can just find different ways to really soften the look. You can also just change it up with a lot of different options to really create a space that is extremely welcoming even if it does use dramatic kinds of colors on a black dining chair.

If you want a natural kind of feeling then you should probably go with a black slate tile. This brings in a lot of different grays, as well as oranges. This can give you a lot more variation. Really the size and shape of slate that you choose to go with is what is going to determine the rest of the design of your room. If you wanted more of a rustic kind of feeling then just go with traditional squares with a wide variation of color. For more of a modern and contemporary kind of look then go for a more unusual large rectangle. You can keep this all in deep grays or blacks for a pretty dramatic kind of effect. Use this in different rooms like with black queen bedding or a black headboard. It also works with a black sectional.

You also really want to pay attention to the grout. This is especially true if you're just going with a basic black ceramic tile. Of course, if you go with a bright white than this is really going to pop and have a high contrast which is perfect if you like a black and white decor look. However, you might want something a little bit more subtle in which case it can be helpful to really darken the color of the grout.

If you have black galaxy tile this is a form of granite. It's really going to add a little bit of sparkle into your room. You can really just continue this theme throughout your space. If you're working in the kitchen then bring in a lot of different stainless steel appliances as well as a backsplash or possibly even a countertop. This is going to keep the room neutral but at the same time, it does ensures that you get a very personal touch to your space so that it just doesn't feel too dark and heavy as well as depressing. Metallic accents are a great ways to just break things up.

If you want more of a subtle look then just try black accent tiles. For instance a mosaic usually uses a lot of whites as well as bright colors. You can really get a unique take on this just by changing it up with several black pieces or even black grout lines. This is also a more sophisticated way to just change up the kind of a Southwest palette and really make it all your own but still have it coordinate with everything else in your room. Neutral colors are great for this kind of design just because with all the different geometric shapes and patterns going on it can seem a little bit too busy so you can just take all of the color out of it to really create a much more sophisticated kind of feeling.

You can also find ways to give feminine look to black tile. A great way to do this is with accent tiles. For instance you could go with a French feeling with the fleur de lis kind of motifs. You can also go with a pattern tile and just put this in with your other white and black pieces. This can mean that you can use a lot of very basic and cheap ceramic tiles. Then you can just bring in the accent pieces to really make an impact.
