Design Trends: Black Wallpaper

Black wallpaper is still fashionable but we're seeing more of a monochromatic look then we have in the last few years. Sure, if you put up black and white birch wallpaper, damask designs, or a toile you won't have to rip it down yet. However, you may want to consider some of these trends as well for a new room.

Damask designs are done in a tone on tone color palette as are florals. This limits your choice of accent colors so you may want to pair it with board and batten molding to add in an additional tone and lighten up the tone. My favorite is the latticework print. The color palette takes it from chic and cottage to cool and modern.

One of My Favorite Black and White Rooms

One of my favorite black and white rooms ever belongs to the Evil Queen on the show Once Upon a Time. It has birch print wallpaper, black columns, and it looks like a marble floor. There isn't any color in the space which at first leads to that "evil" feeling. However, it's so dramatic with the color palette and so neutral that everyone in that room pops. It makes someone wearing red lipstick really mesmerizing. If I would've been decorating it I would've gone with a lot of heavy stone or made it feel like a castle and that's why I'm not a set designer. The modern feeling and color palette feels a little bit dangerous and shows that the Mayor knows who she is at least design wise. Even though the ropm is quite intricate it serves as a backdrop. Do you like the Evil Queen's house?

How to Decorate with Black Antique Furniture

Black antique furniture can add a sense of history to the room like a black living room. This can also be something that you find yourself and the finish isn't so great so you decide to fix it up. You can really use this to get a contemporary style and color that still has a sense of history. This is what is in all the designer magazines now but it doesn't have to cost you thousands of dollars. It can also be a part of black dining furniture. It's elegant to match black crystal chandeliers or black chandeliers.

You might want to take your cues from the original fabric like going with an Asian theme from black lacquer furniture. Even if you're working with antique black antique furniture in the dining room you might want to just really pay homage to this. You might be able to save a little bit of fabric that you can frame for artwork. This is also going to give you some ideas as to patterns and colors that are going to match with this. You want to stay with very traditional kinds of tapestries or floral prints instead of venturing into more modern microsuede's if you want to an antique kind of piece. Be aware that when you do any renovations yourself you run the risk of really damaging and lessening the value of a true antique. You might just want to work with older pieces that don't have a lot of value that you can fix up and try to do craft projects on.

If you are lucky enough to have black antique bedroom furniture then you can really use this in all different kinds of design directions. You could pair it with wallpaper whether it's black wallpaper or black and white wallpaper. This is going to give you more of a formal kind of feeling. Be aware that wallpaper can be a little bit of a hassle to take down and it's a lot more expensive than paint, but it's a way to get a pattern into your room. This is important when you're working with dark colors because you just need to change things up without making anything too overwhelming. You'll want to leave high quality woods alone. You might be able to also mimic this look yourself with either a veneer or just a painted faux finish.

It's also important to mix it in with more modern pieces. This keeps your room from seeming too stuffy. Black is a staple in modern design style so it's going to be quite easy to pair a basic antique end table with a new leather couch. This really lends a sense of history to your room without making things being too stuffy.

You can also really antique it yourself to save on the high end and designer kind of feeling but you will need to do a little bit of practice to get a very convincing look. This can be more subtle if you use a glaze over paint which allows a cream or blue finish to shine through for a lighter effect.

Instead you can use ladder bookshelves. Of course you need to make sure that your kids can’t climb on them. This gives a lighter and airier appearance to the room. It also adds an architectural kind of detail to the space which is important if you just have a plain white box to work with then you really want to add interest and storage at the same time. A great way to do this is with traditional kinds of things by just changing up the color palette which is going to make it seem a lot more like a black contemporary living room. For instance you could go with more of a beach kind of feeling with solid furniture. Then bring in watercolors of the beach. In fact, if you paint yourself it's quite easy to replicate this or you could just copy off your favorite one in different black, grays, and white. Black front doors for home adds a traditional element to almost any exterior. If it seems too contemporary then you might want to add in shutters as well. You could also just paint your entryway in this tone and use taupe for the rest of your living room.

How to Decorate a White Shabby Chic Room

If you want your room to feel light and feminine then consider the color white even if you have black and white room decor. Shabby chic rooms use this palette in abundance with a white coffee table. In fact it might be the only color that is in this theme. However, it's still interesting with all the vintage effects and romantic kinds of feelings. A white color palette keeps cutesy decor from seeming too frilly. You can really use this in every room in your home or use it next to a white couch.
