Modern Black Room Decor

I've found that black and white decor has changed a little bit so it's less harsh. it might use black furniture but not a modern style. It might have Windsor style chairs or hutch armoires. This is in direct contrast to the white furniture and black walls that were popular a few years ago. Now it has more of a farmhouse or country look so that it tones down both the modern and country styles.

Period Living

I am not a huge fan of theme decorating. Instead, I love it when interior design plays around with the existing architecture or antique furniture that you already have. This is also a pretty cost effective way to decorate. This is why I was thrilled to come across Period Living magazine. It's a Britain based magazine and site that stays true to period decor. There's also information about holiday homes. There's even an interesting article about how to make money from your second home.

There's a special section devoted just to readers' homes. You can sort this section by a few of the different rooms that are available. Since I'm from the United States I can't even imagine what goes along with restoring a 17th century house. It's so refreshing to see all of the craftsmanship that goes both into the original structures as well as the actual renovation. Some other decorating ideas include furniture buying and color choices. If you need a step by step guide for your next project check out Period Living.

More Ideas for Black and White Decor

I haven't had many apartments that have been decorated solely in black and white. However, back in the days when I had roommates it was actually a pretty good idea. People could just put all of their furniture together and it would still look somewhat cohesive even if it was in totally different styles.

On a lot of decor forums I've noticed that most decorators suggest getting in contact with your roommate before you move in or before you go shopping and working out a design game plan. Has anyone ever done this? It just seems like it would be difficult to work with all the different personalities if you have several different people living in one house or there are budget constraints.

Decor Nervous Breakdowns

When it comes to most decor and craft projects and definitely renovation projects there always seems to be a risk of a subtle nervous breakdown. Just tune into any design show to prove this. The only one I've ever had didn't have to do with decorating but instead had to do with buying a mattress. The sales people just kept pressuring me or trying to get me to spend more money than I could afford. I didn't have the time to make an informed decision. It was one of the most stressful experiences of my life but it wasn't like I could just skip the process and sleep on an air mattress.

I wish I would've known about Coast to Coast Mattress. I didn't even consider buying a mattress online because of the shipping costs but they have free shipping. Plus it's so simple to find a mattress sale instead of driving to all the different stores in person. The prices were much lower than what I paid in a brick and mortar furniture store. It's also really easy to choose a mattress by size and comfort. You can also shop by brand if you want Simmons options or need to track down a Sealy mattress sale. They also make it easy to find a Serta mattress sale. If you do want some help there is a Mattress Advisor to help you find the perfect fit for you or you can email a sleep specialist. They also have a section for closeouts & overstocks. The salespeople I was talking to at other brick and mortar stores denied that such things even existed when I asked. When it's time for a new mattress I'm definitely going to skip the stressful process of a furniture store and consider shopping online.

It’s Ok to Shop There

It's no secret that IKEA isn't my favorite place. I think it has to do with the mass market furniture and the contemporary style. I love unique antiques, craftsmanship and distressed finishes or natural wood tones. I don't like to assemble furniture.

The one time I would shop at IKEA is probably for lighting. They seem to have really reasonably priced chandeliers and fixtures. Most of them are too modern for my taste but once in awhile there's an iron piece that I really do love. Are there only certain departments that make home improvement stores worth it to you?
