Black and White Accents

Usually when I think of black and white decor it's as an overall color scheme. There is something to be said as using it to finish out your palette if you have daring red or purple walls for balance. The only colors I can think of that it wouldn't work with are brown and possibly yellow because it might look like a bumble bee. If you don't know what to match your wall color with fill out your palettte with a few neutrals.

The Best Black and White Decor

Some of my favorite options for black and white decor is just on artwork. When I've had apartments I've learned to have to decorate with all of my roommates posters. They just look so much better even if they are in black and white since the subject matter never is related. Instead of scattering them throughout your entire apartment I just like them all on one wall; even floor to ceiling.

Period Living

I am not a huge fan of theme decorating. Instead, I love it when interior design plays around with the existing architecture or antique furniture that you already have. This is also a pretty cost effective way to decorate. This is why I was thrilled to come across Period Living magazine. It's a Britain based magazine and site that stays true to period decor. There's also information about holiday homes. There's even an interesting article about how to make money from your second home.

There's a special section devoted just to readers' homes. You can sort this section by a few of the different rooms that are available. Since I'm from the United States I can't even imagine what goes along with restoring a 17th century house. It's so refreshing to see all of the craftsmanship that goes both into the original structures as well as the actual renovation. Some other decorating ideas include furniture buying and color choices. If you need a step by step guide for your next project check out Period Living.

More Ideas for Black and White Decor

I haven't had many apartments that have been decorated solely in black and white. However, back in the days when I had roommates it was actually a pretty good idea. People could just put all of their furniture together and it would still look somewhat cohesive even if it was in totally different styles.

On a lot of decor forums I've noticed that most decorators suggest getting in contact with your roommate before you move in or before you go shopping and working out a design game plan. Has anyone ever done this? It just seems like it would be difficult to work with all the different personalities if you have several different people living in one house or there are budget constraints.

Where to Use Black and White Decor in 2012

For some reason black and white decor always reminds me of New Years Eve instead of year round decor. I know that a lot of people like it in contemporary styles because it works with almost any accent color. Last year though instead of this traditional color palette I've seen all different kinds of gray instead. That's right for this year the new trend in black and white decor is just mixing the two tones together.
