Design Trends: Black Wallpaper

Black wallpaper is still fashionable but we're seeing more of a monochromatic look then we have in the last few years. Sure, if you put up black and white birch wallpaper, damask designs, or a toile you won't have to rip it down yet. However, you may want to consider some of these trends as well for a new room.

Damask designs are done in a tone on tone color palette as are florals. This limits your choice of accent colors so you may want to pair it with board and batten molding to add in an additional tone and lighten up the tone. My favorite is the latticework print. The color palette takes it from chic and cottage to cool and modern.

The New Black

It seems like every season brings with it a new versions of black. The color dominates our wardrobes and homes so much for the simple reason it always looks awesome. It's a classic. However, the new versions of black usually only stay around for about a season. It used to be chocolate brown. Now I think it's navy blue. I have even seen this on painted kitchen cabinets. All of the rules of decorating with dark colors still apply. Balance it out with metallic silvers and natural wood tones. I still probably wouldn't use this on cabinets because who knows if this color palette will endure?

The King of Neutrals

I think that Nate Berkus is the king of neutrals. He uses tons of white and gray as opposed to the black and white scheme and all of the tan tones that were popular before he really came onto the scene. This color palette really doesn't seem to have changed for him; but everyone still loves it..even me. Sometimes he'll use different accent colors and seems to like navy blue or sienna brown for this purpose. Since he's been doing this scheme for so many years he's prove that it's both classic and versatile.

One of My Favorite Black and White Rooms

One of my favorite black and white rooms ever belongs to the Evil Queen on the show Once Upon a Time. It has birch print wallpaper, black columns, and it looks like a marble floor. There isn't any color in the space which at first leads to that "evil" feeling. However, it's so dramatic with the color palette and so neutral that everyone in that room pops. It makes someone wearing red lipstick really mesmerizing. If I would've been decorating it I would've gone with a lot of heavy stone or made it feel like a castle and that's why I'm not a set designer. The modern feeling and color palette feels a little bit dangerous and shows that the Mayor knows who she is at least design wise. Even though the ropm is quite intricate it serves as a backdrop. Do you like the Evil Queen's house?

Shopping for a White Bed

When you pick out a white bed you really need to pay attention to the details. Whenever you have the same piece of furniture for several years or decades it can seem a little bit boring. This is why just focusing in on really subtle embellishments is going to make all the difference.

You might want to really consider this color palette if you're going to go with a really oversized piece. This could be a four poster bed or just a sleigh bed. This can help it blend into the room so that it doesn't seem so large even if it really is.

Black and white beds or anything that's very modern like a platform style is very popular. The great thing about this style is that it can often have drawers underneath. This can be a subtle architectural detail if the drawers are paneled. You might even be able to find some with frosted glass fronts. This is going to be extremely contemporary. It can relate back to a lot of other frosted windows or wardrobes that you have in your space. This is a way to get embellishments in the room without adding an extra accent color.

White wooden beds can feel very country. This is just an opportunity to stay away from heavy oak designs. Real wood can be quite expensive. It can also be quite heavy in the room and really dominate the space. Just going for a painted wood is really going to change this. If you have a good imagination you can find a lot of these pieces that were popular a few decades ago and really turn them into something a lot more modern. This might even just have subtle iron details. You could paint these out or leave them as is.

For a girl's white bed you want to make sure that it really has an intricate silhouette. A good way to do this is with a canopy bed. A four poster bed will also work. This instantly gives it a princess like feel. You could even just add in subtle touches such as curtains or a canopy on top of it. This could also be in the same white color or you could change it up into a more subtle pink.

The great thing about a white bed that you can really explore is all different kinds of bedding options. One thing that you can do for a contemporary kind of space is just going to be to stick with a monochromatic color palette. You can head to white sales to get high thread count sheets and pair it with a white goose down comforter. This way you won't have to mix and match fabrics. It's great for small spaces because it does look so light and airy.

You can take the cues for your bedding from the style of the bed. For instance if you have a platform bed then this is contemporary. This is going to call for more graphic styles of bedding. A great way to accomplish this is just if you have a more traditional style such as a four poster design then you can go with either an elegant damask print or a simple country quilt.
