Design Trends: Black Wallpaper

Black wallpaper is still fashionable but we're seeing more of a monochromatic look then we have in the last few years. Sure, if you put up black and white birch wallpaper, damask designs, or a toile you won't have to rip it down yet. However, you may want to consider some of these trends as well for a new room.

Damask designs are done in a tone on tone color palette as are florals. This limits your choice of accent colors so you may want to pair it with board and batten molding to add in an additional tone and lighten up the tone. My favorite is the latticework print. The color palette takes it from chic and cottage to cool and modern.

The New Black

It seems like every season brings with it a new versions of black. The color dominates our wardrobes and homes so much for the simple reason it always looks awesome. It's a classic. However, the new versions of black usually only stay around for about a season. It used to be chocolate brown. Now I think it's navy blue. I have even seen this on painted kitchen cabinets. All of the rules of decorating with dark colors still apply. Balance it out with metallic silvers and natural wood tones. I still probably wouldn't use this on cabinets because who knows if this color palette will endure?

Are Black and White Out?

Black and white used to be the "it" colors for decorating. However, now it just seems to be shades of gray which honestly I prefer a lot more. I still think it has a place in classic kitchens and it's becoming more popular on patios too. The new neutrals are softer and more toned down.

Modern Black Room Decor

I've found that black and white decor has changed a little bit so it's less harsh. it might use black furniture but not a modern style. It might have Windsor style chairs or hutch armoires. This is in direct contrast to the white furniture and black walls that were popular a few years ago. Now it has more of a farmhouse or country look so that it tones down both the modern and country styles.

The King of Neutrals

I think that Nate Berkus is the king of neutrals. He uses tons of white and gray as opposed to the black and white scheme and all of the tan tones that were popular before he really came onto the scene. This color palette really doesn't seem to have changed for him; but everyone still loves it..even me. Sometimes he'll use different accent colors and seems to like navy blue or sienna brown for this purpose. Since he's been doing this scheme for so many years he's prove that it's both classic and versatile.
